Aquariums are living ecosystems, and maintaining water quality is vital for the health of aquatic life. Monitoring water parameters is a key part of this process, and our new products at Pixelated Nature are designed specifically for this purpose. After testing the water quality with tests you can buy at specialized aquarium stores, writing down the values helps gain insight in the progress and status of your fish tank.
Some of the important water parameters, besides temperature, to measure are:
pH Level: Measures acidity or alkalinity of the water. Ideal pH varies depending on the aquatic species but generally ranges from 6.5 to 8.0. Crucial for fish health and water chemistry balance.
Ammonia: A toxic byproduct from fish waste and decomposing food. Levels should be kept at 0 ppm (parts per million) as even low amounts can be harmful to fish.
Nitrite: Formed from ammonia conversion by beneficial bacteria. Like ammonia, nitrite should also be maintained at 0 ppm due to its toxicity.
Nitrate: Resulting from nitrite conversion. Less harmful than ammonia and nitrite but high levels can stress and harm fish, and promote excessive algae growth.
Water Hardness:
- General Hardness (GH): Measures concentration of magnesium and calcium ions. Important for osmoregulation in fish.
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): Indicates the water’s buffering capacity (ability to maintain a stable pH).
